ADA OUTDOOR GUIDELINES
"In 1999 the ADA Access Board issued the first guidelines for accessible natural trails (which we follow) -
16.2.1 Surfaces: Firm and stable
16.2.6 Passing space: At least 60"
16.2.2 Clear tread width : 36 inches
16.2.7.1 Cross slope : 1:20 (5%) max
16.2.3 Surface openeng : 1/2" dia. max
16.2.7.2 Running slope : 1:20 (5%) any length
16.2.4 Protruding objects : warning req'd
16.2.8 Resting Intervals : Req'd if slope over 1:20
16.2.5 Tread Obstacles: Up to 2" height
16.2.9 Edge Protetion : 3" min where provided
16.2.10 Signs : Info. on trail length and accessibility symbol
The Rule Making process that is required to make the 'Outdoor Guidelines' legally enforceable has taken over 10 years. In 2010 a 'Final Draft Outdoor Guidelines was published, which contained multiple 'exceptions' so that all parties are satisfied. The Wheels On Trail Organization has provided testimony on the 'Final Guidelines' as shown below:
